Ballroom dancing is that perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation, and it can bring so much to your life. It’s a great workout; has countless documented physical and mental health benefits; can enhance your social life and self-confidence; reduces stress and depression; promotes relaxation; is a wonderful outlet for self-expression and creativity; and it’s FUN!!
Each month we will learn TWO of the dances (one Rhythm & one Smooth) described below in a structured and progressive way. No dancing experience necessary and beginners are welcome!
If you're going to learn one ballroom dance, this is the one. Waltz is one of the world's most loved and well-known ballroom dances. With a range of patterns, this dance offers something special for dancers of all ability levels. We offer three forms of the Waltz: International Style, American Style, and Viennese. International Waltz has dancers in a closed embrace following established footwork patterns. American Waltz is more free-flowing, allowing dancers more improvisation and expression. This classic dance can be accompanied by music of various tempos.
This steamy dance has been enthralling audiences since its introduction. Tango has two forms: the American Style and the International Style. American style uses larger movements to highlight an exuberant expression of passion, while the International Style is more closely held. You'll establish confident footwork and a flair for performance.
Spirited and lively, the Viennese Waltz will have dancers turning and twirling around the dance floor twice as fast as the more subdued standard Waltzes. Intermediate and advanced dancers looking for a challenge will enjoy this aristocratic and athletic dance. Today, the Viennese Waltz is still performed at the world famous annual Viennese Opera Ball, but is known to cause a sensation on dance floors the world over.
A fun and easy dance to learn, the Foxtrot can be danced to a wide variety of music. Foxtrot can be danced to big band, swing, or 50's rock and roll. Our popular dance class will have you twirling and turning on the dance floor with grace and ease. The Foxtrot is great for beginners and can be danced on crowded dance floors at parties and weddings. We offer two styles of the Foxtrot: American and International. The International Foxtrot is a subdued, smooth, and flowing motion, while American Smooth Foxtrot is upbeat and energetic.
Upbeat, exuberant, and dynamic, the Quickstep is an excellent style for dancers of intermediate skill level, or for those who have mastered basic slow-tempo dances. The goal of the Quickstep is for dancers to maintain a graceful form with quick and precise movements, while maintaining an effortless and elegant demeanor. First danced to ragtime jazz music, the Quickstep will have you hopping, skipping, and gliding all the way across the dance floor.
Latin & Rhythm Dances for All Levels
Cha Cha is a fun, flirtatious dance with playful energy. It's easy to learn and fun to dance. Like so many Latin dances, it originates from Cuba. It gained instant popularity due to its simplicity. Cha Cha can be danced to almost any music with a good beat, from traditional Latin rhythms to club music, from country to pop. Also don't forget that the movements tend to be somewhat flirtatious. This is definitely a party dance!
Samba is a lively dance of Brazilian origin. It's a popular party dance, characterized by simple forward and backward steps and rhythmic hip movements. In Brazil, it is a solo dance, performed at street festivals and carnivals. Ballroom samba, on the other hand, is a partner dance that has little in common with the original form. The most characteristic element of samba is probably the so called samba bounce, which is achieved through rhythmic bending and straightening of the knees.
Rumba, or sometimes 'rhumba', is a slow and flirtatious dance. Some say it is the spirit and soul of Latin American dance. It's certainly a dance of romance and always a good choice for weddings. Due to its slow rhythm and sensual movements, some call it the most intimate and passionate dance there is. Learning rumba is not difficult. The ease of learning is actually one of the main reasons why it's more popular today than most other Latin dances. Once you learn the simple steps, the music does the rest. Rumba can be danced to a variety of music, from contemporary to traditional.
We recommend to wear modest street clothes or athletic attire that you're comfortable moving in. It should be something relatively form-fitting since it's helpful for ensuring correct movement and body alignment.
Shoes are the most important part of dance attire: choose shoes that support your heel and have a leather sole. Ballet or Jazz shoes work very well and are available for purchase at the studio. As your dancing progresses, you will want to consider purchasing a pair of ballroom dance shoes, which have a flexible suede sole, and are designed to give the dancer better control and maintain correct body alignment.
